York

Variously Roman, Angle, Viking and Norman, York here is the old city built within 3.4 kms of 13th-14th century stone walls and surrounded by greater York which, while not the main attraction is leafy, tidy and low-rise. The old city can be circumnavigated along the top of the wall and inspected at close quarters from meanders through back streets and squares, ideally early in the morning or at night; this place is justifiably popular.
